Åsen - the low hill left of Grøtshornet

Introduction

Åsen is a low forest hill, squeezed in between the higher neighbours Storfjellet (950m) and Grøtshornet (663m). The hill doesn't have a name on any maps, but the locals refer to this hill as Åsen. As Åsen means the hill in English, the name is appropriate.

This page describes a short route (on path) from Ertresvåg. If one was to visit this hill properly, one could start out at Ertresvåg, follow the ridge all the way to Tunga and return on path along Lake Vågsvatnet.

A longer approach would be from Slyngstad, almost 4,5Km to the top. There might not be a path all the way. Refer to the Øygardsheia page for trailhead access, and continue 600m northeast from the Øygardsheia parking.

Primary factor:

Åsen (Norge 1:50,000: 224m, Økonomisk Kartverk: 226m, UTM 32 V 374698 6940877) has a primary factor of 128m towards the higher Grøtshornet (663m). The saddle (approx. UTM 32 V 375073 6940700) is found between the two tops. Ref. Norgesglasset (5m contours), the saddle is within the range 95-100m, interpolated to 98m.

Personal GPS measurement read 224m as average height over a couple of minutes.

Access

From Ålesund, follow highway E136->E39 towards Åndalsnes. From the E136/E39/Olsvika roundabout near Breivka, follow E39 approx. 13,3Km. Turn left onto highway RV661 (Skodje/Brattvåg/Vatne). After 1,5Km, pay toll at an unmanned toll booth (coins + credit cards + AutoPass). Approx. 9,7Km after you left E39, you reach the RV659 (Brattvåg)/661(Vatne) junction. Turn right and drive to Vatne. When you reach Vatnefjorden, turn left towards "Hellandshamn". Drive 5,6Km and turn left onto a gravel road. Drive 550m to a Y-fork. You can park at the fork, without blocking for other traffic.

The route

Follow the leftmost road, which turns into a forest trail/tractor road after you've passed a cabin. Follow the trail all the way to the Åsen - Grøtshornet pass. Go past a fence and then approx. 50 meters. You should see a vague path to your right. The path heads northbound up the ridge, then switches west and traverses north until you reach the ridge. The high point is located 300m to the west, marked by a single rock.
