To use the Garneselva river as a "path" to Garneshornet, Flåna or Garneshornet may seem like a very, very strange thing to do, but I tell you - it's big fun! And - one avoids all the bush on this side of the mountain. On this Monday afternoon, I took the trip (again) together with my friend Anna. On our climb across Liadalsnipa the day before, she was in a type of terrain that she was quite comfortable with (steep, rocky and airy), but she had never scrambled a river before. I can only assume that she was curious about how the hike would be like..

Scrambling a river of this length (1km) is a good exercise for the brain and the body. One has to think fast to avoid falling off a slippery rock and every muscle is in activity during the scramble. It's just like scrambling a slippery mountain, except with the risk of falling into a pool...

It didn't take long before Anna was well accustomed to this form of scrambling, and I overheard the remark "this is fun!!". "Mountain guides" like to hear things like that. Getting a bit wet is unavoidable, but on a warm summer's afternoon, it doesn't matter much. I reckon if you have kids from 10-12 years and upwards, they would love this form of activity. Why not try it out?

Arriving at Lake Garnesvatnet, we headed straight up to Garneshornet for some scrambling and climbing. Garneshornet doesn't really offer good climbing opportunities, but there are a few overhanging pitches that I wanted to try out with the safety of a rope. Moreover, the climbing and scrambling added a nice dimension to this - already fun hike.

We descended along a path on the ridge west of the river and came back to our starting point 3h:10m after heading out. One thing is for certain - Anna is not the average Flåm - Sognefjord - Bergen tourist...
