Introduction

Leinehornet is the highest point on Leinøya island, located just west of Ulsteinvik on Hareidlandet, and is the 6th highest independent top in Herøy kommune.

As from most of the Herøy tops, the views are superb. The summit panorama involves mountains in (a.o.) Hareid, Sykkylven, Ørsta, Volda, Vanylven, Sande, Giske and Haram kommuner. Not bad for a 30-minute, easy walk on path to the top.

To extend the walk, you have the possibility to include Leinebjørnen (271m) on your hike. There are also a couple of other minor tops on the Leinehornet massif, allowing you to have a noteable roundtrip on this island.

The mountain area where Leinebjørnen is the highest point, is called Vardeheida/Vardeheia. This is where the summit cairn is located, and per Mar 2008, there was a mailbox which stated that Vardeheia is 270m. On the Økonomisk Kartverk map, this point is 268,5m while Leinebjørnen (160m to the north) is 270.54m.

Access

(all distances are approx. distances)

The nearest larger city is Ålesund. From Ålesund, follow highway E39 towards Bergen, and then RV61 towards Hareid. Take the Sulesund - Hareid ferry.

Entering Hareid, you pass through a roundabout. Follow RV61 and drive 16,8Km (you pass Ulsteinvik along the way). In the RV653/RV61 junction, turn right towards Måløy/Fosnavåg. Soon after you entered Gurskøya island, stay on RV654 (Fosnavåg) and don't follow RV61 towards Måløy. 11,5Km after the 654/61 junction, you reach the Moldtustranda/Fosnavåg junction. Turn right. Proceed 5,5Km to the Runde/Fosnavåg - Torvik junction. Turn left. Proceed 1,3Km and turn right towards Runde/Leine.

Drive 2,1Km to Leine and locate a road going up to your right (30Km zone). Turn right onto this road, drive 100m and turn left just after the school and the schoolyard. Drive 600m up a narrow road and find parking at the end of the road.

Leinehornet

At Leinestøylen, and by the house on the east side of the road, you see a cute little bridge that marks the beginning of the mountain path. The path runs to the right of a barn, crosses the creek and continues northeast towards Leitet where you'll see the Leinehornet/Leinebjørnen trailsign. Gradually, the path turns to the northwest, and leads you up to Leinehornet summit, marked by a proper cairn.

There are several paths up this hillside. Descend your ascent route, or explore the terrain.

Leinebjørnen

Follow the Leinehornet path from Leinestøylen (see above). When you reach the path junction (150m elev.), turn right and follow the path towards Vardeheida. The path aims for the ridge halfway between Sollida and Leinehornet. Follow the ridge to the southwest and visit both Vardeheida (summit cairn) and Leinebjørnen (160m to the north, and with a fallen trig. point).
