Introduction

Liatårnet is the highest point on the island of Sotra, located just outside Bergen. Liatårnet is also the highest point in Fjell kommune, one of two kommuner on the Sotra island (Fjell and Sund). A convenient mountain service road leads all the way up to the radar station (approx. 320m). The remaining distance to the actual high point must be traveled on a mountain trail.

The views from Liatårnet are tremendous. From left to right you see Eldsfjellet in Holsnåy, Ådneburen in Masfjorden, the Austlendingen massif, Osterøy mountains, the Bergen city mountains, Gullfjellet, Sveningen and Mønuken near Os. In clear weather the views reach beyond these mountains. Liatårnet is a great hike for the family with one of the best viewpoints in the region as the reward.

Height and Primary factor:

Liatårnet's primary factor is 341m, as Sotra is an island.

From here, drive 4Km on highway 555 until you turn left towards "Lie/Bildsøy". Turn right (towards "Lie") 100m up the road. Drive 500m on this road before you turn left towards "Lie". The route

Follow the (approx.) 2,75Km paved mountain service road up to the radar station at approx. 320m elevation. Look for the "Liatårnet" trailsign on the left-hand side of the road near the top. Follow a path downwards towards a small lake (on your right). The trail continues towards Lake Tårnvatnet. You will have the lake on your right. For a few meters, you will have to step on some rocks in the lake. After this point, the trail turns sharp left and climbs up to the summit. In rotten snow, be careful up and down this hill.

Access

From Bergen, follow highway 555 towards Sotra. Cross the Sotra bridge and follow highway 555 to the 555/561 junction (roundabout) just after Kolltveittunnelen. Turn left towards Klokkarvik and drive 4,7Km. Notice a paved road (closed by a gate) on your left. Find parking here. You should also see two bus-stop signs (located on both sides of the road).

The route

Follow the paved road approx. 700m and turn right in the upcoming road fork. The new road you are on are also closed by a gate. Follow this road approx. 650m into Bjørkeldalen valley. When you see the "Nordsjøløypa" trailsign, turn right onto a narrow (but very visible) path that runs SE along a creek from the mountain.

At approx. 255m elevation (below the Liatårnet's steep west face), the trail forks. The easy route runs turns left (NE) and climbs up between the steep face and a distinct ridge. Turn right on top of the ridge and walk the remaining meters up to the high point. If you turn right in the fork at 255m elevation, you approach Liatårnet from the south via a steep route. This route should be avoided when the mountain is icy.
