This Friday, I was on my way from Ålesund to Hankø (near the city of Fredrikstad), for a most excellent week-end with good friends. It was the annual cognac, beer and wiener (hot dog) tasting event, and it gets just as fun as you may think. 13 sorts of cognac/whisky/aquavit, 10 sorts of beer, and 5 sorts of wiener. And we don't spit. All of this spicy stuff makes us quite thirsty, so extra beer is required. And there are prices. Fine prices.
The plan was to meet up with some of the guys at Vikane 18:00PM, which gave me two spare hours on the road. I decided to spend these two hours on Rånåkollen. I let the GPS guide me to the only path that was on the map, and the dog and I were on our way 10:17AM.
The walk up to the summit cairn was quite uneventful, and we reached the cairn 11:00AM. At the time, I had no idea that there (supposedly) was a higher point further southwest on the plateau, and nothing seemed higher either. The dog did not seem to enjoy the mountain. In fact, he didn't enjoy the week-end either, even if he got wiener leftovers. The foul mood was discovered at the Vet on the following Tuesday. After pulling the 6th tooth within 12 months, he was a happy dog again. He's quite a sight when he tries to chew a bisquit. Poor old fellow.
After pictures, we headed back down and reached the car 11:41Am. A couple of fighter jets were leaving smoke all over the sky. Normally, I wouldn't have given it a second thought, but in these days of climate debates, it seemed a bit ... excessive.
Soon we were back on the road, and 670 Kilometres fly by quickly, knowing that a cold beer (and then some) is waiting at road end.
