Saudehornet

Saudehornet

Introduction

Saudehornet (The sheep's horn) is the highest mountain in the region west of the Follestaddalen - Romedalen valleys. There are many prominent, sharp, wild and rugged peaks in this region, and from Saudehornet, you can see (nearly) all of them.

Located directly above the place Ørsta, Saudehornet is a popular and frequently visited mountain. Although the upper section is steep, there are no exposed or difficult sections. Although the route is marked by paint, the mountain becomes more intimidating when fogged in. Saudehornet is skied in winter, but foremost by those who enjoy steep skiing. There MAY be avalanche danger on the mountain.

Saudehornet is the high point on a long ridge that also span the tops Akslahornet, Vardehornet and Kyrkjetinden. It is probably fair to say that any roundtrips on this mountain massif should only be attempted by experienced hikers.

Saudehornet rett opp is an annual popular summer event. The fastest time (from downtown Ørsta!) recorded in Aug. 2004 was 00:52:56. Apparently, the record is approx. 00:52:52. In winter, X2 is a very popular event. The winner is the one with the fastest time up to Saudehornet and then up to Nivane and back to Ørsta.

Access

From Ålesund, follow highway E39 towards Bergen/Volda to the ferry at Solavågen. Take the ferry over to Festøy, turn right at Festøy and follow E39 towards Ørsta. In Ørsta (35,2Km from Festøy), turn left onto a road 100m after you've passed the "Folkehøgskule" sign. Follow this road 1Km northbound until the road is blocked by a gate. Park here.

The route

Follow the service road 1,1Km northbound, then enter a forest path at the first left-hand curve. Cross the river, pass a cabin (on your left-hand side) and head up to the Vallahornet - Saudehornet saddle. Follow Saudehornet's south ridge up to the summit cairn. The ridge route is marked by blue paint. Be careful above 1200m. The ridge is not directly exposed where the path runs, but you shouldn't fall here.
