Part of the route, seen from Storebroren
The time had come to visit Storebroren from the west. The first time I visited this top, I started out from Hareidsdalen in the east. My starting point today would be Ulsteindalen, where I had never been before. The plan was to visit Koppen (394m), Breidfjellet (535m) and Sarshornet (543m) before ascending Storebroren (620m). I would then descend along Mosvasselva river. 1,4km into Ulsteindalen, at 110m elevation, I parked by the waterworks. A gate prohibited further driving, but I wasn't looking for a higher trailhead. 1,2km later, I was at 300m elevation, left the road and headed for Koppen. A path took me to a cabin, but from the cabin, I had to follow very aggrevating terrain (turfs) before I reached Koppen. The high point was unmarked, and I left a small marker from the 2 rocks that I could find. Next stop was Breidfjellet. The views had been pretty OK from Koppen, but now the fog was moving in. From Breidfjellet, I didn't see very much at all. But it was very nice to walk along the snowy edge in the fog. The drop towards Flødalen was impressive. It wouldn't be trivial to make a direct ascent from Flødalen, should one want to do so..
Breidfjellet
Sarshornet was similar to Breidfjellet; gentle towards the south and with a steep north side. I passed a grouse during the ascent and tried to sneak in as close as I could get, but I was made early on. Still, it was a nice encounter. The grouse blended in perfectly with the snow... The final top was Storebroren. I went far out on the edge, hoping to discover a route up from Brørevatnet, but found none. Brørevatnet was quite a sight, with mosaic ice on the east side, and open on the west side. I reached the top of Storebroren 1:36pm, 2h:15m after leaving the trailhead. I was in doubt on how to return to the trailhead. It was tempting to descend along the easy terrain I had been following, but OTOH, I was also up for a round trip. A round trip would involve Lake Mosvatnet, in one way or the other. Perhaps the ice would hold?
The ice held just fine, but I stuck close to the shore. Just in case. The descent along Mosvasselva was a little boring, and I considered including Mosvarden on my round trip. But I ended up sticking with the valley, and resisted the temptation of taking a short-cut across Lake Litlevatnet. This lake was open towards the west, and was probably unsafe altogether... I was back at the trailhead 2:55pm, 3h:35m after leaving the trailhead. The round trip was 12,5km and the vertical gain was 650m. All in all a very nice (yet uneventful) round trip. |
