Introduction

Storronden, 2138m, is the second highest mountain in the Rondane massif, which has 10 peaks above 2000m. The general, and easiest, approach is from Rondvassbu, a DNT hut

Access:

On highway E6, just north of Otta, exit towards Mysusæter. I'm not sure of the distance, but would guess 23-25Km. At Mysusæter, you can proceed north-east towads Spranget, the national park border, for a fee. Parking is available at Spranget.

The trail:

The road from Spranget to Rondvassbu is approx. 5-6Km, and runs on the east side of the river Store Ula. Although the view is great, many would like to do this section as quick as possible, and bring bicycles.

The "T" marked trail Storronden trail begins at Rondvassbu, and runs steep up to 1400m, where the trail to Vinjeronden/Rondeslottet takes off to the left. The trail up to Storronden continues in a north-east direction, and the terrain turns into rock. Not much to say about this trail.

Trip Report:

This was first autumn hike for Bjørn and I. In the following years, we would do other peaks in Jotunheimen and Colorado. We made this a day hike, leaving Oslo early morning. We brought two bicycles to shorten the time from Spranget to Rondvassbu. The rain was pouring down, the fog went almost all the way down to the hut, and I realized there would be nothing good about this trip, except for getting the peak.

We parked the bikes at Rondvassbu, and immediately started the hike. Bjørn is the type of guy who keeps an incredible pace even if he's not trained for it. Me on the other hand, lacked both pace and training. The hike was a battle of keeping up with him, and I was exhausted. Above 1600m, a strong wind, together with hail made things even worse, and I wanted to turn around. Bjørn explained that wasn't an option, so we continued. I was very happy when I reached the top, but felt robbed for the view. We could only imagine the large amphitheater 600m below us. There was nothing bad about the hike down, even the weather was the same. After a short break at Rondvassbu, we rode our bikes back to the car. 4 hours later, we arrived Oslo. A long day-hike was over.
