Ulriken seen from Korketrekkeren trail

Montana - Ulriken - Turnerhytten - Indianerstien trail

Difficulty: Easy Click on thumbnail to see map
Risk: Low
Distance:
Time: 1,5 - 3,5 hours round-trip
Starting Elevation: About 200m

Access:

On highway 585 between Paradis and Haukeland Sykehus, exit towards "Montana", 800m south of Haukeland Sykehus (hospital). Follow the curved road upwards. When you seem to be on the highest level, ignore the last sign to Montana, and continue ahead on a straight long road. Just before the road starts to descend, find a place to park on the left hand side (this is a one-way direction road).

The trail:

Locate the trailhead, next to some garages and a stair (see picture), and hike up the grassy slope (see picture). The trail runs through a small part of forest (see picture) before you reach another trail. Hike this trail up to the left for 50m, and you will encounter the main trail (lit). Continue up to the right, and after another 50m, you will see two benches, one marked "250m" (see picture).

Alternatively, you can follow the last "Montana" sign up to a foodstore. Park nearby, and locate the main trail going through a gate and past pidgeon houses. Follow this trail until you reach two benches, one of them marked "250m" (see picture).

Three trails forks off from here (see picture). The one straight ahead is the one you will be coming down. Ignore the one going up past the information sign. Follow the one to your left, behind the benches (see picture). Walk steep up through the forest, under two power masts before you encounter open terrain. Now you will have "hump" #1 in front of you (see picture). Hike up the foothills to the hump, and pass it on the right-hand side. Once around hump #1, you will see hump#2 (see picture). Also pass this one on the right-hand side. Once around, you see Ulriken summit and the final ridge leading up to it (see picture). The hike from the trailhead to the top can take you anywhere from 25min (or less) to 1 hour.

Enjoy the view from Ulriken (see picture) before you continue. Locate the high point behind Ulriken (see picture) and head for the obvious trail through the small pass on the right side of the summit. Once through the pass, you will now see Vasslifjellet mountain and the Turnerhytten hut that is your next goal (see picture). The first part of the trail can be wet, but once you get to the poles marking the Turnerhytten trail, you pretty much stay on solid ground. The hike from the high point pass to Turnerhytten takes you anywhere from 20min to 45min. Just before you arrive at the hut, notice the Vidden trail junction (see picture) This trail takes you over the Rundemanen (see picture), the mast you saw north of Ulriken. (This is a 2-4 hour hike)

While at Turnerhytten hut, this is a good opportunity to hike to Byfjellene high point at 673m. Climb up the nearest ridge by the hut, and you will see Haugsvarde straight ahead.

From Turnerhytten, head west on the Indianerstien trail. If you pick a southwest direction, you will end up in Sedalen (another trail to be described later). Hike on the Indianerstien trail 5-10 minutes before you start to descend (see picture). The trail runs diagonal down the mountain, taking you to a couple of nice, small lakes, excellent for camping (see picture). Continue west around a hump, and hike over another hump before you arrive the Korketrekkeren trail (that comes from Ulriken. See picture). Follow this wide and very visible trail down to the trail junction where you went left. On your way, you will reach the Lægdene trailhead (see picture)- the third trail that runs up between Langerinden and Korketrekkeren. The hike from Turnerhytten back to your car should take you anywhere from 20min to 45min.
