Åsnakken is the northernmost top on the peninsula between Tomrefjorden and Tresfjorden, and offers fine views towards Otterøya and the Molde region. A forest road takes you all the way to the top, which is very popular amongst the locals.

On the top, you will find a "gapahuk" - a shelter with a roof and walls, but open in the entrance. The concept is very family-friendly, and the children will appreciate an "evening out" up here.

The "gapahuk" sign says "VETIN", which points back in time to the old coastal defense system. A "Vite" was a stack of wood, on strategic points along the coast, and to be set on fire when the enemy was approaching. "VETIN" is what this area is called in dialect. According to the book Den Norske Leidangen, the wooden cairn is referred to Viten på Åshammaren, på halvøya mellom Tomrafjorden og Tresfjorden. Thanks to Kai Stokkeland - a frequent Åsnakken visitor - for pointing me in the right direction, in terms of the sign. He also participated in building this "gapahuk", and strongly recommends Åsnakken as a family trip.

From the E39/Olsvika/Breivka roundabout outside Ålesund, follow highway E136->E39 eastbound towards Åndalsnes. You pass the place Sjøholt, drive across Ørskogfjellet, down Skorgedalen valley to the Molde/Åndalsnes junction just before you reach Tresfjorden. Turn left towards Vestnes and drive 5,6Km (through the place Vestnes) to the RV661/E39 roundabout (you turn right towards the ferry to Molde in this roundabout).

Follow RV661 800m, turn right just after a large building on your left-hand side. You enter a Y-fork. Turn left and follow the road 750m upwards. You see an old shack on your right-hand side. Park here.

The route

Follow the forest road upwards. By a red mailbox, turn right. At the next forest road junction, turn right. This junction is signed. Follow the forest road all the way up to the Åsnakken plateau, where the high point is just ahead of you. You will see a bench, and the roof of the "gapahuk". Descend your ascent route.
