The second voyage of "the
Hawk" took place on this beautiful Saturday. Mate
on this trip was Per, on a visit from Ålesund. The maiden voyage went to
Kjeholmen earlier in the month. The main goal was now
Bakarholmen - a small
island just outside Kjeldsund.

The water was still and the sun
was shining. As I (voluntarily) would be doing the labour, Per could just
sit back, relax and enjoy the day. We went straight over to Bakarholmen and
walked up to the high point (30m). I had a new and interesting view towards all
the mountains that I know so well, which was quite nice.
Back on the fjord, the mission was to row around
Bakarholmen. That
would include meeting a bit rougher sea on the other side. Not that there
was anything to be nervous about, but I had brought my camera while the
waterproof bag is still on order.
The sea was indeed rougher on the other side, and I was somewhat happy
when the outside shore ended and we could head back to calmer waters.

Almost back at where we
started, I decided I wanted more. Once again we went up the sound between Bakarholmen
and Hestholmen, but now the goal was now to go around Hestholmen island.
This would be a longer trip, but I didn't want to stop now. Per also
had a go at rowing, but soon concluded that things ought to go back
to the way they were..
We stopped by Fiskberga (a very tiny island) - before rounding
the northeast tip of Hestholmen. People in cabins followed us through binoculars.
We waved and they waved back. I was seemingly getting to grips with naval
culture. It was cool to pass the old smokery on
Hestholmen and see it up close from the water. This old factory seriously
needs a shine-up.

We were back at Kjeldsund almost three hours after heading out. The total distance was
6,1km, and now I feel I know the Kjeldsund area a whole lot better than I did
prior to September. It is clear that the GPS map isn't very accurate when it
comes to these islands. According to the GPS tracks (which I trust more), we
rowed almost 400m on land on Hestholmen. Bakarholmen is only 25m at
its narrowest point, and not 55m as the map shows. And Fiskberga
stretches further west. Weird as it may seem, I enjoy discovering stuff like
this...
