I had to settle for a short hike this Saturday. I would have to get up in the middle of the following night in order to drive Ålesund - Nesodden (near Oslo) and back again. Sunday would be busy (1200Km of driving) and there was no need to exhaust myself in the mountains prior to this trip.
I chatted with buddy Svein, and we decided to visit Byrkjevollhornet. We agreed to head up from Vestre, which would be a "no-brainer". We didn't want to "worry" about cornices on the routes from Eikesætra. We could always have followed the standard route via Skjerdingshalsen, but we've both already done that route on our Blåskjerdingen visits. Besides, there could be snow. So, Vestre was the choice, and we were curious how easy or difficult the 700 vertical meters ascent from the fjord, would be.
It turned out to be quite easy. We started out from Ura, and the owner gave us permission to park by the house. He found it a bit odd that two guys came driving up to his house and asked for a good route to Byrkjevollhornet. He wondered if we were having a bet, or something.
No bets, and we headed up the forest, found an opening in the birch forest, passed a pine forest and hit an intersecting forest road. We followed this road 150 meters, crossed Djupedalselva, and followed a forest ridge upwards. Higher up in the forest, we followed tracks (animals) up to the plateau. We agreed that the forest was quite open and friendly, yet realizing not everyone would agree to this.
We headed upwards 14:45PM and reached the top of Byrkjevollhornet 16:10PM, without rushing. The weather was getting better by the hour, and Byrkjevollhornet was a very good place to be on this Saturday evening. After pictures, we headed back down the same way, and stopped for some bouldering on a huge rock below Helsetnakken (See the Helsetnakken page for pictures of the rock). After a few minutes, it was evident that we needed (at least) climbing shoes in order to climb this rock. I guess we'll be back..
