Norwegian Mountains, Sogn og FjordaneFivlenosi on skis, Apr 11 2010To the main Fivlenosi page (maps, route descriptions, other trip reports, etc.)
After a fantastic trip to Grovabreen the day before, Fivlenosi was on the agenda for this Sunday. Anne (Rudsengen) and me were on the way to Fivlenosi already in February, but because of too much snow, we agreed (as we were passing Gaupne) to go to Vorfjellet instead. But there would be no change of plans today; the weather was gorgeous and skiing conditions were excellent. I was quite amazed when we drove up Vigdalen. What a wild, wild valley, and moreover; people live up here! I tried to imagine how driving up and down in midst winter would be like. Not to mention how it was like before road improvement and the tunnel. Vigdalen presented itself in a fine spring colours, and we didn't pass any snow until we reached Syneshaug. We could start skiing already at the trailhead. Excellent timing!
We skied towards Vårstølen (but not far enough to see the "Fivla" signpost), agreed on what seemed to be the easiest route up the forest, crossed river Vigdøla (on a snow bridge) and found the "T" trail immediately after crossing the river. We followed the trail (corridor) up to the Storhaug - Fivlenosi pass, where we got Dalsdalen in view. Instead of sticking with the trail, we chose a route up the forest where we had Dalsdalen in view at all times. The forest between 750m and 900m is the most cumbersome section on the entire route to Fivlenosi. But, it can also be fun!
Once above the forest, we had Fivlenosi and the Fivla cabins in clear view. Fivla seemed like a natural place to stop for lunch. The snow was just perfect, and I couldn't wait for the descent!
From Fivla, we had yet another 500 vertical metres to ascend before reaching the summit. Every second of this ascent was pure delight. Oh, the views! I absolutely love the Sogn og Fjordane mountains! To spend this Sunday in any other way is - IMHO - simply not justifiable! We reached the top of Fivlenosi 2:18pm - 3:15m after heading out from Syneshaug, and I might have become temporarily religious... (no disrespect intended in any way)
After a long and enjoyable stay on the summit, it was (high) time for the descent. This was - most likely - the most superb skiing conditions I've ever come across on a mountain. We could ski Telemark or run parallel turns. The snow allowed for all types of skiing, and you probably recognize that strong desire of wanting to go back up again? A picture from the descent was later featured in Turmagasinet (Sogn og Fjordane Turlag). Photographer: Anne Rudsengen
From Turmagasinet (Sogn og Fjordane Turlag)
I had brought my widest Telemark skis, while Anne had regular mountain skis. Which didn't seem to affect her much...
Descending Fivlenosi - with a view!
After yet another memorable ski-trip, we returned to Syneshaug 3:55pm - 4h:50m after heading out. And like always - I fell "in love" with a number of new mountains that I just have to visit. Hest, Asbjørnnosi, Vongsen, Vassdalsfjellet, Liabrekulen - to name a few. Stay tuned!
