Introduction

This page will describe routes to four tops with Barmsundet as common reference. Kvamfjellet (774m) is the highest mountain top in Selje municipality, and can be reached on a good trail from Berstad. The views from this top is most excellent!

Flistrahornet is Kvamfjellet's lower neighbor to the southwest. The normal route (one off-trail pitch) runs from Øyra, and the west face is impressive (see the below picture).

Sandvikhornet has vague paths all over the mountain, but you will probably need to be a local in order to stick to one of them (from Sandvik). If you're not really bound by paths and trails, the route to Sandvikhornet isn't difficult. Venøya high point is a short, but cumbersome hike from Langeneset.

Primary factor:

Kvamfjellet (Norge 1:50,000: 774m, Økonomisk Kartverk: 774,2m & 776,59m, UTM 32 V 310113 6879769) has a primary factor of 536m towards the higher parent mountain Staurdalsegga (787m). The defining saddle (approx. 32 V 317124 6877226) is found between lakes Bekslevatnet and Juvatnet. Ref. Økonomisk Kartverk (5m contours), the saddle is within the range 235-240m, interpolated to 238m.

Normally, westcoastpeaks.com use heights stated on Økonomisk Kartverk, but as there are two heights printed on top of each other, the height that aligns with Norge 1:50,000 has been chosen.

Flistrahornet (Norge 1:50,000: 637m, Økonomisk Kartverk: -, UTM 32 V 308030 6877377) has a primary factor of 105m towards the higher parent mountain Kvamfjellet. The defining saddle (approx. 32 V 308917 6878679) is found by lake 531m between these two tops. Ref. Økonomisk Kartverk (5m contours), the saddle is within the range 530-535m, interpolated to 533m.

Sandvikhornet (Norge 1:50,000: 307m, Økonomisk Kartverk: 306,98m, UTM 32 V 305923 6877657) has a primary factor of 119m towards the higher parent mountain Blåfjellet. Follow a well-worn T path along the north side of the creek / river. The path climbs up the forest and at N61.97851 E5.32261 you'll see a small bridge across the creek. Don't cross the creek, instead keep heading east/southeast into Flistradalen valley. Allow yourself to be impressed of the grand wall above you. The path gradually fades away as you head into Flistradalen.

The valley floor is too cumbersome to follow. Follow the ridge on the south side instead. At N61.97658 E5.33677, you'll reach a small lake. It's easiest to cross on the south side. Set your course northeast and aim for a short, but steep grassy pitch that takes you up to the east flank. There is a path up this flank. If you find this pitch too steep, walk around and locate easier terrain on the back side. Follow the path (it probably comes from Venedalen) up to unmarked high point (N61.98003 E5.33587).

Route 3: Sandvik - Sandvikhornet (summer/autumn)

Difficulty : YDS Class 2 (mostly off-trail)
Exposure : No
Distance : Approx. 1,5km to the top
Time : Approx. 1 hours to the top
Starting Elev.: Approx. 10m
Vertical Gain : Approx. 300m (total)

Locate a vague path that runs into the nearest valley. After 150 meters, turn left (east) next to a ruin an follow a vague path upwards - next to a cliff. From here on, it's simply a matter of finding the best route up the forest. The top (N61.98147 E5.29545) of Sandvikhornet is not marked.
