Introduction

Kjølen (The Keel) looks like a keel, upside down, and is probably the most anonymous hump on Ørskogfjellet. The top, which is located on the Ørskog/Vestnes kommune border is easily reached from E39 by Skitnesetra, or from Tomresetra by Svartløkvatnet. There is no distinct path leading up to the top, but the terrain, except from Kjølen's north side, is overall gentle and easy.

Kjølen could be a good top to ski from Skitnesetra, if you have small children, and have to take distance and elevation gain into consideration. Along with Nysæternakken, Kjølen would have to be one of the easiest tops, exceeding 500m elev., in the entire county.

Access

From Ålesund, follow highway E136->E39 eastbound towards Åndalsnes. You pass the place Sjøholt, drive across Ørskogfjellet, down Skorgedalen valley to the Molde/Åndalsnes junction just before you reach Tresfjorden. Turn left towards Vestnes and follow highway E39. At Vestnes, turn westbound onto highway RV661 and drive towards Tomrefjord. At Tomra, turn left onto a road marked "Seterveg". The distance from the Molde/Åndalsnes junction is 18Km.

Alternative route:

From Ålesund, follow highway E39 towards Åndalsnes. From the E16/E39/Olsvika roundabout near Breivka, follow E39 13,3Km. Turn right onto highway RV661 (Skodje/Brattvåg/Vatne) and drive the remaining 17,5Km up Vatnedalen valley and down to Fiksdal. Turn right in the Fiksdal junction and drive 7,3Km until you see the "Seterveg" roadsign on your right-hand side.

Follow the "Seterveg" road 3,3Km, passing the Tomrereset parking area before you turn left towards Tomresetra (signed). Drive 300m and find a place to park.

The route

Follow the road down to the creek from Egga, and turn left onto a tractor road just before the creek. Follow this road up to the meadow, where a small ladder will help you across a fence. From here on, the route is off-trail, directly towards Kjølen. You will cross boggy ground, more creeks and more fences, but altogether a fairly unproblematic walk.

Kjølen is steep from this side, but you should have no problems ascending from the west. Alternatively, curve around the top until you see a fitting place to ascend.

Descend your ascent route, or head eastbound down Skitnseterryggen, down to Småtjørna, and follow the power lines back to Tomresetra.
