Klovekinn (Cloven Cheek) and Klovetinden (Cloven Peak) are two landmarks located west of Barstaddalen valley, the gateway to the famous Molladalen valley. Klovetinden and Storhylla (Big Tabletop) further west might have been the same mountain once upon a time, but nowadays, the giant gap named Masdalskloven divide the two peaks.
Stortua (Big Turf) is a hump that you pass on your way to the Klovekinn - Klovetinden plateau from the north, and offers a fantastic run on skis down to the fjord if the snow conditions permit. A forest road runs up to 280m elevation, helping you up the steep and cumbersome north side of this mountain. If the snow is hard/icy, crampons are needed to reach Stortua and Klovetinden.
From Klovetinden, you have a grand view towards Molladalstindane and Kolåstinden plus the fjord and sea view which includes Hareidlandet, Sula and the Haram peninsula. In addition, you have the spectacular Masdalskloven abyss below you.
This page will describe the route from Rotaneset (north), but it also possible to head up the Barstaddalen valley and ascent the Klovekinn - Klovetinden plateau from just east of Lake Klovvatnet. See Tinderangling.net for pictures from this route.
Klovetinden (M711: 949m, Ø.K.: -, UTM 32 V 356021 6913124) has a primary factor of 159m towards the higher parent mountain Storhylla (960m). The defining saddle (approx. UTM 32 V 355990 6913002) is found in Masdalskloven, between the two tops. Ref.the M711 map (20m contours), the saddle is within the range 780-800m, interpolated to 790m.
Klovekinn (M711: 920m, Ø.K.: 919,67m, UTM 32 V 357156 6914058) has a primary factor of 70m towards the higher parent mountain Klovetinden (949m). The defining saddle (approx. UTM 32 V 356400 6913264) is found between the two tops. Ref.the M711 map (20m contours), the saddle is within the range 840-860m, interpolated to 850m.

Access
From Ålesund, follow highway E39 towards Bergen/Volda to the ferry at Solavågen. Take the ferry over to Festøya. Turn right in the direction of Volda and follow the road 6,2Km. You should now see a farm on your left-hand side. Find parking on one of the small turnouts on the right-hand side of the road, but don't block for tractor traffic.
The route
Go up between the farm houses, and continue up the forest road that begins behind the farm. The forest road is wide and convenient. You will probably notice that from time to time, the ground above the road has given way and large rocks have come down. At approx. 280m elevation, you will see a cabin. The forest road ends here.
Pass the cabin on the left-hand side and stay left on your way towards the north flank. You pass a small belt of bush along the way, but it is easy to pass. Once on the flank, proceed up to Lyngefjellet, passing the broken 684m trig. point.
The hill from Lyngefjellet to Stortua may require crampons if the snow is hard or icy. Under such conditions, keep the crampons on until you have passed Stortua. Klovekinn is just a short trip up to your left. Go there for additonal views that Klovetinden won't give, but don't move too far out on the cornices.
Cross the plateau and ascend Klovetinden. This hill may also require crampons when the snow is hard or icy. The summit is marked by a small cairn. Descend your ascent route, or down to Klovvasselva river via Klovekinn's south side. Then descend down into Barstaddalen. You need to be able to determine if it is safe to descend to Klovvasselva on this route.
