Introduction

Veten, also known as Kornbergveten, is a popular top, located just above the village of Folkestad. Veten is also the northernmost top on the peninsula between Dalsfjorden and Voldsfjorden. Because of this location, Veten was home to one of the many coastal "vetter" (wooden cairns, set on fire under enemy attack) during the Viking era. In the book Den Norske Leidangen, this top was known as Åsebøviten, Viten, Vikvarden and Ekornberghornet. The name Kornbergveten relates to the place Kornberget below the mountain, but it is interesting to see that the book refers to Ekornberget. Ekorn (squirrel) is quite different from Korn (corn).

The normal trailhead begins at Sollida and follows Kvidalen up to the Galten - Veten ridge. The route described on this page is the shortest possible route (off-trail from Løndalen) to the top. Veten is a good viewpoint towards the mountains west of Voldsfjorden/Dalsfjorden, as well as the Ørsta peaks from Vartdalsfjorden to Hjørundfjorden.

Access

(all distances are approx. distances)

The nearest bigger city is Ålesund. From Ålesund, follow highway E39 towards Bergen/Volda to the ferry at Solavågen. Take the Solavågen - Festøya ferry, turn right at Festøy and follow highway E39 towards Ørsta (38,3Km). At the highway RV655/E39 junction in Ørsta, follow E39 (Volda) for 9Km until you have the ferry harbor in Volda on your right-hand side. Turn right here and enter the Folkestad lane. There are two ferry departures from here. The other ferry runs between Volda and Lauvstad.

At Folkestad, take the first road to your right. After 500m, you enter a 3-way fork (close to an old school building). Take the left road and follow the road all the way to Løndalen, passing Nybø and Åsebøen. Following the correct road may not be easy, as there are a lot of road forks and no signs. There is parking for 1-2 cars just before the uppermost house at Løndalen.

The route

From Løndalen, get onto the forest ridge to your right (facing the forest). Follow the terrain as you see fit. The general direction is westbound all the way. The summit is marked by a cairn and a trigonometric point. You'll pass an old cabin just before the summit.

Descend your ascent route, or follow Kvidalen down to a small cairn (UTM 32 V 343859 6892427) near a meadow at 290m elev. This is approx. 150m north of the Kvidalen creek. Continue east on a forest ridge, stay close to a small valley to your left, and you'll find a tractor road that will take you back to Løndalen.
