Norwegian Mountains, OpplandMehøe, July 21 2009To the main Mehøe page (maps, route descriptions, other trip reports, etc.)
The 2009 summer vacation in northern Norway was definitely over, and I was on my way home to Sunnmøre. A 885km drive calls for some "leg stretching", and I decided to stretch my legs on Dovrefjell. Mehøe presented itself as a nice and easy top to visit. Thanks to the GPS, I found a minor road that took me a bit closer to the mountain. I parked the car, continued up the road and saw a cabin to my left. Chances for finding a path near a cabin are normally good, and so I headed over there. And sure enough, a faint path led me into the forest. The path suddenly ended (at least it seemed to) in front of a boulder field, and from there on, the rest of the route was off-trail. I chose the steepest doable route, just to get "it over with" and after some cumbersome leg work, I arrived safe and sound on the plateau above. The rest of the route up the top was just a stroll.

The hike up to the top took me 35 minutes, and there was no reason to linger around on top for very long. So, after a round of pictures, I was on my way down - this time heading southwest. I certainly did not want to see that boulder field again. At first, my choice of route seemed sensible, but then I found no graceful exit from the terrain I had entered. Again, I was facing boulder and slippery (after rain) rocks. 37 minutes after leaving the summit, I was back at the car and could continue my journey to Sunnmøre. Due to the wonderful summer up north, I had almost forgotten how rain felt, but I was reminded when I reached Romsdalen. And the looks I got from the oncoming cars certainly made the long drive worthwhile. Romsdalen and rain
