Norwegian Mountains, Møre og RomsdalProsten, Grøntinden, Kaldtinden, Aug 1 2008To the main Prosten/Svartevasstinden/Trolltinden page (maps, route descriptions, etc.)
After my recent visit to Svartevasstinden, I got a sudden inspiration to visit Prosten. Prosten had been on my roadmap for quite some time, but on this Friday afternoon, I decided to make the trip. The weather was very nice, and I enjoyed the drive to Måndalen. It's been a few trips along Romsdalsfjorden since I moved to Ålesund, and this would certainly not (knock on wood) be my last. I had settled for the path to Mosetra. At the local farm, I got useful information about the tractor road system in this forest. Which was, as I had anticipated, slightly complex. But getting to Mosetra was supposedly straightforward, and 5:20pm, I was on my way. Prosten I had no idea on how I would approach Prosten, and assumed a natural route would present itself. At the farm, I was told to ascend via Grøntinden, but as I passed Mosetra, there was a whole lot of forest between me and the mountain, but no path leading towards Grøntinden. I decided to stick with the path I was on. When I was in the process of passing Prosten, I left the path and headed off-trail towards the mountain. I was above the forest now, and walking was easy. The ridge between Grøntinden and Prosten didn't look easy to get onto, and I changed my course towards Grøntinden. But then I noticed a slope that just might get me onto the ridge. And if that didn't work, I could probably find an ascent route closer towards Grøntinden. My route up to the ridge
The slope was my ticket up to the ridge. It was a bit steep, and I made sure I didn't slip and fall back down. That would have been very ouch. Once on the ridge, Prosten wasn't far away, and 7:30pm I was standing on the top. There were lots of interesting things to look at. First of all, Svartevasstinden, which I visited a few days earlier. Next, Lake Svartevatnet, gorgeous to look at, 400 vertical meters below. And finally the northeast ridge. I had been looking at this ridge during my ascent. I strongly considered going down this way, but didn't know if I would run into trouble. I decided to stick with my original plan and come back for the northeast ridge at some other point in time. I scrambled perhaps 50 vertical meters down the ridge. It was steep, but it did seem doable. And very fun. Grøntinden The Prosten - Grøntinden - Kaldtinden ridge
I decided to move on. I wouldn't run out of daylight any time soon, but I had still two tops to visit, plus the descent. The ridge towards Grøntinden seemed quite trivial at first, but suddenly, the ridge got narrow and my idea about this being a perfect ridge for skiing was shattered. Well, it could still be skied, of course, but an ice-axe (and possibly crampons) would probably be needed. Moving on, I had the option to stick with the ridge, or seek non-scrambling terrain down on my right. I chose the ridge, of course, and enjoyed the scrambling very much. The time was 8:15pm when I stood on top of Grøntinden. Kaldtinden Kaldtinden ahead
Next stop was Kaldtinden. I did notice a steep rise on the ridge, but figured I would find a route on the west side. The east side seemed "too easy". But as I got closer, it became evident that I had no business on the west side. The climb up the ridge would probably have been really fun, but I wasn't going climbing today. I did what I suppose most folks do, bypass the steep section on the east side. 8:40pm, I was on top of Kaldtinden. Descent It was time to go home. I didn't have a descent plan (other than following the ridge from Kaldtinden) and I wasn't a stranger to the idea of a bush-war. But then I noticed some cabins just above the forest. Near cabins, one will often find a path, and so I did. A path led me down to a tractor road, and soon I was back at the tractor road. I passed a flock of sheep and noticed that a lamb was limping. Back at the farm (9:45pm), I reported the limping lamb, and was rewarded with gratitude from the owners. A good end to a perfect evening hike! |
