Revsdalshornet from Sunndalen, July 28 2007

Since Wednesday, I had been fighting a virus in the stommach. On Saturday morning, I didn't wake up with any pain, and assumed the damned thing had passed. It was overcast weather outside, but it wasn't raining. I quickly decided to go for a hike, and figured that Revsdalshornet was a good candidate.

I put my gear and my dog into the car and headed out. I reached the ferry to Ørsneset with the closest margin possible, and was ready to hike out of Sunndalssætra 11:20AM. I had looked at the Fjellhug pamplet, but the route information wasn't very precise. There was a path up to Brekka, but where exactly?

Ascent

It begun raining as we headed out from Sunndalssætra. After just a few minutes, I noticed a path heading upwards. Nah, can't be this one. Not according to the pamplet. I continued on a vague path into the valley, but eventually I lost faith in finding the path, so I went off-trail. The off-trail ascent was very hard. The rain made the high grass wet, and I got soaking wet. There were numerous hidden holes, the rock was slippery, I was carrying a dog, and now the stommach pain had come back. I considered turning around. But was I dying? No. Was I close to dying? No. So why turn around?

Close to 600m elevation, I stumbled upon the forest path. The path came in from the west, while I came from the south. I wasn't even near the path, which was some sort of comfort. Once on the path, the hike was quite trivial, except for the pain. But 13:05PM I was standing on top of Revsdalshornet. The views weren't good at all, but I didn't feel too bad about it. This wasn't the finest viewpoint in Sykkylven, and accessible as the mountain is, I can always return one day for a sunny afternoon hike.

Descent

The descent was awful. I wasn't able to walk for more than half a minute before the pain became too strong. I had to sit down for a few seconds, in a position that took away some of the pain. This pattern repeated itself all the way back to the car. Fortunately, Troll walked all the way from the top and back to the car. The path I was on turned out to be the path that I considered in the very beginning. Oh well...

Doctor, doctor..

We got back to the trailhead 14:35PM and the drive back to Ålesund wasn't pleasant either. When I got back home, I was completely exhausted and went immediately to bed. Except for letting out the dog now and then, I stayed in bed until 05:00AM on Sunday morning, when I got up and headed for the emergency room at the hospital. After 1,5 hours of waiting for drunk people being to be sewn up and doped people to wake up, it was my turn. I wasn't very sick or anything, and the pain was only pain, but I needed to know if anything was broken. After checking the vital organs, the Doctor concluded that it was a virus, and I would be better off in bed than on the mountains. Following the doctor's advise isn't exactly my reputation, but I made an exception. Sunday was spent in the house, mostly in bed. And with a good conscience too...
