Introduction

Lake Jølstravatnet is surrounded by mountains, and Såtefjellet (Steinbotnegga) is found on the north side of the lake. If you follow the high ridge to the northeast, you'll end up on Botnafjellet (1572m) - one of the major mountains of Sogn og Fjordane county.

Såtefjellet is a fairly easy hike or ski-trip up from Helgheim (approx. 850 vertical meters, and 4,6km). This page describes a winter route from Helgheim. The mountain's east side can give you a memorable descent on skis, but do consider the avalanche danger before you set off...

(all distances are approx. distances)

The nearest larger town/village is Skei. From the roundabout (N61.57189 E6.47919), follow highway E39 west (in the direction of Førde) for 2,8km and you'll see a forest road going upwards on your right-hand side (N61.56152 E6.43248). Find parking nearby without blocking for other traffic.

If the road conditions permit, you can drive 1,1km up the toll road and find parking at 330m elev.

The route

Follow the forest road upwards and pass the summer parking at 330m. Continue 500 meters up the forest road, then leave the road (N61.56870 E6.41072) and head northwest (left) into the forest (off-trail). Look for red paint on trees. After 300 meters, you cross the river on a bridge. Continue northwest until you reach the power-lines. Follow the power-lines until you reach the east ridge. Follow the ridge up to the summit (N61.57324 E6.37298), marked by a proper cairn.
