Introduction

Storegga is located on the south side of the mountain region defined by Dalsfjorden to the west, Voldsfjorden to the north, Bjørkedalen to the east and Hjelmelandsdalen to the south. Trollvasstinden (1285m) is the highest peak in this region.

Storegga is foremost known as the top above the Harpefossen ski-resort in Hjelmelandsdalen. The mountain belongs to Eid municipality, but the Volda-Eid border runs just 2,5km north of the summit.

This is an easy top to reach in winter, as the ski-lift takes you up to 777 meters. In summer, you'll have to walk the 720 vertical meters up from the Harpefossen trailhead. The reward is an extensive view from the top (especially to the south). High Volda peaks (such as Klakken and Ljosuregga) obstruct the view towards the Sunnmørsalpane mountain range.

Access

(all distances are approx. distances)

The nearest larger town/village is Nordfjordeid. From here, follow highway RV15 to the west, in the direction of Måløy. After approx. 5,5km from Nordfjordeid, turn right when you see the Hjelmelandsdalen signpost. After 3km, you arrive at a junction. Turn right. This junction has the Harpefossen signpost. Continue 2km to the east, until you reach the Harpefossen ski-resort and parking area.

Note that you can also get here from Bjørkedalen, along a curvy (and very exciting) gravel road. This road is probably closed in winter.

The route is easy; straight up! It's best to stay west (left) of the ski-lift - in the middle of the ski-slope. There is a service road east of the ski-lift, but the switchbacks will make this quite a detour. Besides, it ends at 420 meter elevation. Be aware of objects that can surface after the snow has gone away...

You pass a viewpoint cairn 50 meters southeast of the high point - which is only marked by a single rock (unless someone has built a proper cairn after Oct. 2010).
