The goal for this afternoon hike with Svein Myhre was Rollsbotnskorka and Litleskorka. The plan changed when it was confirmed that *all* Sunnmøre mountains that exceeded 1000m were hidden in fog. Rollsbotnskorka was certainly an attractive mountain in terms of views, so we decided to settle for the lower Storlihornet. We would always "compensate" the missing views with sunny hikes to Storbua, Sandfjellet and Rollsbotnskorka.
I had never hiked up Dalskleiva, and looked forward to get to know yet another trailhead. In fact, I returned three days later and hiked Storbua and Sandfjellet from here. We parked the car at the parking area at (approx. 380m) and were on our way 17:05PM. It didn't take us long to reach the fog, and by the time we reached Lake Kleivvatnet, visibility was very low.
After passing the lake, the GPS told us we were at the base of the north ridge. We headed upwards with the intent to handle the obstacles as they came. The "obstacles" presented themselves as a series (3 to be precise) of cliff bands. For every cliff, we had to seek left to find a convenient route around.
We felt that the sun was "just above", and every now and then, we got a brief glimpse of nearby mountains. We reached the top 18:25PM, and decided to stick around for a while, in case the fog lifted. It never did, but we got glimpses of Øverøystolen, Dyrdalstinden and Storbua. At least, more than nothing.
18:50PM, we headed downwards. You can't "win" everytime. Walking in fog has its moments. Especially if you want to find the way without using a GPS. Senses are sharpened, and years of experience bring along certain techniques. Our techniques still need some work, because at the lower section, we had to take a quick look at the GPS to ensure that we were heading in the right direction. I'm pretty confident that if we had walked by ourselves, we would have focused harder. But chatting as we were.. you know.
We reached the trailhead 20:05PM. A nice walk it was, despite the visibility. I couldn't even remember the last time I did a foggy hike. About time, it was. And then there was "Home Simpson" by Kleivvatnet. Unforgettable..
