Introduction

Syvdsalpane / Breiteigsfjella are common names for the row of characteristic peaks that rise 650-800m above Syvdsfjorden in Vanylven. However, these peaks do not have a "back side" - as they merely spring out of the Sandegga - Trollkoppehornet ridge. Trollkoppehornet is officially the highest point on this ridge, with Sandegga and Koppehorn (point 968m) just a few meters lower. Heights vary between Økonomisk Kartverk (ØK.) and the 1:50,000 map, and westcoastpeaks.com has traditionally followed ØK.

The walk from Syvdsneset to Skor is a classic Vanylven hike, estimated to approx. 5 hours, without difficult sections. However, the ascent from Syvdsneset is steep and strenuous. It is recommended you have a car awaiting at Skor...

As you pass Fossanipa, you will have to choose whether to follow the ridge (Sandegga - Trollkoppehornet) or to continue along the edge you've been on so far. The view down from - and up to these tops is dramatic. This is very rugged terrain. In addition, you have fjord views (Rovdefjorden, Syvdsfjorden, Vartdalsfjorden) all the way, which adds flavour to the already beautiful scenery.

All of the tops along the edge are characteristic in their own way, but Høystakken stands out when viewed from below. The west face has been climbed in summer as well as in winter. Information on whether this top can be reached from above will hopefully be provided on this site in the near future.

Primary factor:

Trollkoppehornet (Norge 1:50,000: 973m, Økonomisk Kartverk: 974m, UTM 32 V 330472 6894000) has a primary factor of 291m towards the higher parent Snøhornet (1024m). The defining saddle (approx. UTM 32 V 332916 6893050) is found close to Skoravatnet, between Storhornet and Myrkevassegga. Ref. Økonomisk Kartverk (5m contours), the saddle is within the range 680-685m, interpolated to 683m.

GPS measurement read 979m (on the ground), averaged over a 5-minute period (error margin +/- 1,6m). This is notably more than the map heights (973m & 974m). On Sandegga, the GPS read 977m (on the cairn - approx. 1m high, error margin +/- 1,2m) and this is also notably higher than the map height (970m). Below is the GPS profile for the high tops, as well as a table with data for most of the Syvdsalpane tops (Høystakken & Skoranipa are not on the list)

Access

(all distances are approx. distances)

The nearest larger city is Ålesund. From Ålesund, follow highway E39 towards Bergen, and then RV61 towards Hareid. Take the Sulesund - Hareid ferry, and from Hareid, follow RV61 (roughly) 42Km to Årvika, 5,1km from Larsnes.

Take the Årvika - Koparneset ferry, and follow RV61 6,6km to a junction at Eidså. Turn left onto highway RV652 and drive 11,3km to Skor (passing the village of Syvden along the way). Leave one car here (you can park close to the bus-stop) and continue 4,8km to the old ferry harbour (left-hand side) at Syvdsneset. Park here.

From Syvdsneset, walk towards the Lillebø farm, turn left and head north 200-300m. It is not easy to see any path here. Continue in the southeast direction, and stay left (north) of the ridge. Switchback until you see the vague path that takes you up to the ridge at 200m elevation.

In short, you follow the ridge route all the way up to Haukelandsnipa, but shortly after passing Skinstødet (336m), the ridge gets quite steep. Go east (left) 70-80m before you curve back onto the ridge. The path is vague here.

After passing 500m elevation, the ridge gets steep again, and you will need to find the best way upwards. One solution may be to stay left of the ridge and gradually gain height until you top out on the ridge again. The rest of the route up to Haukelandsnipa is easy.

Continue across Labergsheia, Keipen and Fossanipa before you turn southeast towards Sandegga and Trollkoppehornet. Both tops are marked by proper cairns.

From Trollkoppehornet, descend west towards Fossane river. Locate a vague path on the left-hand (south) side of the river. Further down, the path is even harder to see. Aim for the cabin down on the meadow by the easiest route.

From the cabin, follow a path to the river, cross it, and stay on this path all the way down to Skor. You may lose track of the path in the lower forest just above Skor, but as you're effectively down from the mountain, this will sort itself out..

Walk up the road north of the river, turn left at the first fork, then follow a field upwards, close to a stone fence. You'll join a forest path, and you'll have to look hard if you want to stay with it. If you lose track of it, then just head up along the river and expect bush! The path runs approx. 150 meters north of the river until you reach 120 meters elevation. Then, then path takes a northeast course up to 170 meters before it turns southeast and joins the river at 320 meters. Here, you'll have to cross the river. Continue 100 meters up to a cabin. The path ends here.

From the cabin, continue (off-trail) east into Skoradalen and ascend Botnaberget's east ridge where you see fit. The top of Botnaberget is not marked by any trignonometric point or cairn.
