Introduction

Sandfjellet is one of the lower tops on a complex ridge that runs between Stordal and Tresfjorden. The ridge also makes a branch (a very significant branch!) towards Innfjorden, and the entire ridge includes tops such as Storbotnshornet, Lauparen, Sandfjellet (not the same!), Trolltindan, Nonstinden and Middagstinden - to name a few.

This particular Sandfjellet top (there are MANY with the same name in Møre og Romsdal county) is a straightforward hike or ski-trip from Tresfjord, if you look aside of a section of birch forest that can make skiing awkward. In summer/autumn, you can drive to 180m elevation, follow a nice tractor road up to 450m, then a short path to Nordigardsætra before you take on 200 vertical meters of dense small-birch forest. Once past the birch forest, the remaining distance up to Sandfjellet summit is trivial. You can also reach Sandfjellet via Hoemsætra, but the route via Nordigardsætra is the shortest.

From Sandfjellet, you get some good views towards the higher neighbour Sandfjellet (1470m), Lauparen, Kvitnyken, Næremstindane, Sprovsinden and Trolltinden on Ørskogfjellet. Furthermore, you get a nice view towards the string of peaks north and northeast of Molde.

Primary factor:

Sandtinden (Norge 1:50,000: 1041m, Økonomisk Kartverk: 1041m, UTM 32 V 406504 6933567) has a primary factor of 155m towards the higher Blåfjellet (1043m). The saddle (approx. UTM 32 V 406854 6933078) is found between the two tops. Ref. Norge 1:50,000 (20m contours), the saddle is within the range 880-900m, interpolated to 890m.

Personal GPS reading measured 1042m as average height over 5 minutes, on top of the cairn (1,5m high).

Access

From Ålesund, follow highway E136->E39 towards Åndalsnes. From the E136/E39/Olsvika roundabout near Breivka, follow E39 47,1Km (passing the place Sjøholt along the way). Turn right towards "Åndalsnes". Drive 7,7Km to Tresfjord, then turn right towards "Øvstedal". Drive 2,6Km and turn left (unsigned) just before a bridge. Drive 1,3Km upwards until road end at 180m elevation. This road is not plowed in winter, and - according to the map - this is a toll road. By Nov 2006, there was however no toll booth around.

The route

Follow a tractor road upwards to 450m elevation. Turn right onto a visible path marked "N" (Nordigardssætra) and follow this path 100-200m to the old buildings. From here on, go off-trail, northeast, all the way to Sandfjellet summit. The birch forest section is a bit dense and cumbersome, but doable. Sandfjellet summit is marked by a proper cairn. Descend your ascent route, or consider visiting Hoemstinden or Blåfjellet.
