Introduction

Tveitakvitingen is the "king" of the southern Kvamskogen and Fusa mountains. Fuglafjellet, on the north side of highway 7 is however the highest mountain in this region, but Tveitakvitingen is the "people mountain". The winter ski-trip up Såta, across Gråfjellet up to Tveitakvitingen is a classic. The views from Tveitakvitingen are spectacular, including view of almost the entire Hardangerfjord and the mountains along the Folgefonna peninsula.

The normal way to approach Tveitakvitingen is from from highway 7 via Mødal. There are other off-trail routes from the north which also are described on this page. The other sides of Tveitakvitingen is more serious and more suited for those who want to stay away from the public paths. Interesting routes are the trail from Tveita to Vetlaskardet pass (between Raudaberget and Tveitakvitingen) and the Tveitakvitingen southeast ridge from Strandebarm across Kråkenosi, Tåkenuten and Storavasseggane. On my Gavlen/Raudaberget page I also describe how you can get to these mountains from Holmane via Jarlandsfjellet.

Statens Kartverk create some confusion about the kommune border on Tveitakvitingen. On my M711 map from 1988, it is clear that the summit is a tri-kommune border between Samnanger, Fusa and Kvam. On both the newer and the older Norgesglasset interactive map, the tri-kommune border is found 675m northeast of the summit. This is also the case on my GPS map. When looking at the 5m contour map on Norgesglasset, the tri-kommune border runs across the summit. In other words, there various sources of information do not align. I've spoken with representatives from Statens Kartverk, Fusa, Samnanger and Kvam kommune. There is consensus about Tveitakvitingen being shared by all three kommuner, and Statens Kartverk would check for possible errors. This picture illustrates the deviation.

Of all the named points along the routes to Tveitakvitingen, I have only included Høganovi on this page, in addition to Tveitakvitingen. Due to low primary factor, I do not consider named points such as Såta, Gråfjellet, Bjørnahinovi, Storagrønovi (etc.) independent mountains. These named points however serve well being destinations for skiers and hikers not going all the way to the summit.

Primary factor:

Tveitakvitingen (M711: 1299m, Ø.K: 1298,70m) has a primary factor of 856m towards the higher Fuglafjellet (1334m) This ranks Tveitakvitingen as #6 in the entire Hordaland Fylke (based on primary factor). The rank also suggests that you get tremdendous views from the summit. The nearest higher mountain (Fuglafjellet) is 15Km further northeast. There are no higher mountains in Hordaland to the west or south, so the views are unobscured for quite a long distance.

The saddle is found near Jonshøgdi and highway 7 (on the south side of the road). Ref. Økonomisk Kartverk (5m contours), you cross the 445m contours on the high route, but not 440m. The saddle height is interpolated to 443m. This picture shows the saddle location.

Høganovi (M711: 1101m, Ø.K: 1101,06m) has a primary factor of 118m towards the higher Tveitakvitingen (1299m) The saddle is found just east of lake 982m, at the Tveitakvitingen foothills. and lake Gråurdvatnet. These lakes are found south of lake Hamlagrøvatnet. Ref. Økonomisk Kartverk (5m contours), you cross the 985m contours on the high route, but not 980m. The saddle height is interpolated to 983m. Note that the 1000m contour on Ø.K. is in places annotated as 1025m.

Access

From Bergen, follow highway E16 (Oslo). At the Trengereid roundabout exit right onto highway 7. Follow highway 7 down to Samnangerfjorden. Pass Bjørkheim, drive through two tunnels and pass the highway 48 (Tysse) exit. Set your odometer at the bridge before the exit towards "Kvitingen". Continue approx. 14,7Km and locate "Mødalsvegen" road on your right hand side. Find parking nearby. Access on this road is limited to cabin owners. This exit is only 700m after the NAF camping. You may get accomodation, groceries and information here.

My personal appeal to those who are responsible: Allow for traffic up Mødalsveien in summer and put a fee box at the start of the road. This works everywhere else. Alternatively, let the NAF camping rent out keys to the gate like they do for Steinkvanndalen. The 3Km+ road to Mødal is (IMHO) boring and adds no value for a hike to Tveitakvitingen.

The route

Follow the gravel road through the cabin area and all the way to Mødal. Smaller roads fork here and there. Stay on the main road. At Mødal, a marked trail ("T" trail) begins just before the cabins at the end of the road. Follow the "T" trail all the way to the east side of Såta, then follow a high mountain trail across Såta. From Såta, you will see Tveitakvitingen. Follow the cairn route across Gråskorvenuten and Gråfjellet before you reach the Tveitakvitingen foothills and a number of small lakes. Determine an access route that you are comfortable with. A proper cairn marks the summit.

I am to redo this route and come back with a greater level of detail about the route.

Pass Bjørkheim, drive through two tunnels and pass the highway 48 (Tysse) exit. Set your odometer at the bridge before the exit towards "Kvitingen". Continue approx. 6,9Km (this is shortly after the Fossenbratte tunnel) and locate a narrow gravel parking area on your left. Find parking here unless signs tell you otherwise (things do change over time).

The route

Cross the road, pass a hut (painted red by Nov 2000) and cross the river via a bridge. Head east (off-trail) towards the Rabalheii north ridge. Once on the ridge you will find a path that leads up to the Rabalheii summit.

From Rabalheii, follow a distinct gully up towards lake Langatjørni. Head towards the Bjørnahinovi ridge, continue across Høganovi and join the "T" trail from Mødal (see above) towards Tveitakvitingen.

I am to redo this route and come back with a greater level of detail about the route.

Hwy 7 - Tveitakvitingen via Storagrønovi (summer)

Difficulty : Class 2
Exposure : No
Comments : Long hike
Distance : Approx. 8Km to the summit
Time : Approx. 3-4 hours to the summit
Starting Elev.: Approx. 250m
Vertical Gain : Approx. 1100m

Pass Bjørkheim, drive through two tunnels and pass the highway 48 (Tysse) exit. Set your odometer at the bridge before the exit towards "Kvitingen". Continue approx. 4,8Km. You have a bridge ahead of you, a large parking area on your left, and a gravel road forking to your right. Park on the left hand side of the road. There is also an information bulletin board here.

The route

On the right hand side of the road (coming from Bergen), there is a round-up place for sheep. The trail begins here. The trail is visible, but unmarked. The trail runs southbound all the way up to Kvanneviksnuten (830m). Once across the timberline, cairns have been set up to lead the way. From Kvanneviksnuten, head southeast towards Storagrønovi, which you clearly see from Kvanneviksnuten. It looks steep, but there is a gap in the northern end (closest to you) where you can head up. Proceed across Storagrønovi and points 1083m and 1069m before you ascend Tveitakvitingen from the northwest.

I am to redo this route and come back with a greater level of detail about the route.
