Hovdevatnet and the surrounding hills

The forest hills surrounding Hovdevatnet offer many possibilities for recreational activities. Helgehornet (623m) is a proper mountain and is described on a separate page. This page will describe how you can get to the hills Ytrehovdeåsen and Indrehovdeåsen on forest paths and how to extend the (short) hikes into round trip hikes.

Indrehovdåsen (Norge 1:50,000: 190m, Økonomisk Kartverk: 185m is the highest contour, UTM 32 V 347266 6898164) has a primary factor of 69m towards the higher parent mountain Helgehornet (623m). The defining saddle (approx. UTM 32 V 346049 6897338) is found on a meadow south of Hovdevatnet. Ref. Økonomisk Kartverk (5m contours), the saddle is defined through a fixed point - 121m.
Ytrehovdeåsen (Norge 1:50,000: 170m, Økonomisk Kartverk: 169,77m, UTM 32 V 346706 6899276) has a primary factor of 72m towards the higher parent mountain Helgehornet (623m). The defining saddle (approx. UTM 32 V 345959 6899354) is found near a road on the northwest side of Hovdevatnet. Ref. Økonomisk Kartverk (5m contours), the saddle is within the range 95-100m, interpolated to 98m.

Route 1: Hovdebygda - Ytrehovdeåsen (All seasons)

Access
(all distances are approx. distances)
The starting point for this route description is Ørsta/Volda Lufthamn Hovden. Get on E39 and drive in the direction for Ørsta for 330 meters. Then turn left onto Ytrehovdevegen road, signposted Steinnes.
Drive 600 meters, then go straight ahead in a junction (the road to the right continues to Steinnes and around the peninsula). Continue 550 meters and find parking by the Hovden Møbel building (N62.18884 E6.06960).

Cross the road and locate the Ytrehovdeåsen signpost. Follow the road up to a house, then proceed towards the forest and continue on the forest path. You will soon run into the Akslahylla signpost. Turn left here, and follow the path to the west.
On your way across the forest ridge, you'll pass Geitenakken (N62.19256 E6.05985, 169m) - only 1 meter lower then the high point - another 350 meters to the west. The high point (N62.19396 E6.05380) is signposted as Høgstepunkt 170m (highest point).
Round trip suggestion; follow the path west until you reach the forest road between Digernes and Hovdevatnet. Follow this road down to Hovdevatnet and then Ytrehovdevegen back to your starting point.

Route 2: Hovdebygda - Ytrehovdeåsen (All seasons)

The starting point for this route description is Ørsta/Volda Lufthamn Hovden. Get on E39 and drive in the direction for Ørsta for 330 meters. Then turn left onto Ytrehovdevegen road, signposted Steinnes.
Drive 50 meters, then turn left onto the Indrehovdvegen road. Follow this road 300 meters and turn right onto Skulevegen. Drive 100 meters and find parking near the school (N62.18469 E6.08000).

Follow Skulevegen to the end - by a house, then cross a meadow and aim for the forest ridge. You'll probably see the Nakkevegen signpost. From here, follow the forest path all the way to the top (N62.18423 E6.06551) - "marked" by a tall pole. Enjoy flora information along the way.
Round trip suggestion; continue 450
meters across the ridge and you will reach a road. You can turn right and
descend to Hovdevatnet and follow a path back to your starting point. You can
also turn left and follow Indrehovdevegen road back to the trailhead.
